Status of the German translation of eCS 2.0
2010-01-17
Many changes were made to the files we'd already translated, so it was a
good idea to wait until the en_US version will be finished. From what I can see
from the sources, there won't be that many changes anymore.
I tend to wait some more weeks before any further action (if at all): Some
people have reported to help out with translation, but someone has to
coordinate the work.
I'm pretty sure I should be the one to do so. Let's see if that will work. (I
planned to spend less time on eCS, originally.)
I think we're now about two months behind the en_US version, assuming there
would be people around who want to work on the source files.

The current CVS source is not compilable anymore due to SMP file changes
made on 2009-07-15. That affects also other languages.

eCS development has made a huge step forward: Joachim has released his
(very welcome) pre-boot menu changes.
- They work well.
- Finally, the old APM support can now be selected. (The
current ACPI version actually can't replace the
well-working APM support for TP models like TP 43p or R52
and below.)
- Thorolf has made a suggestion how to improve usability
even more. It looks very obviously to me. (I wish that
would have been discussed before, maybe on the eDG list,
because changes in the pre-boot menu are quite extensive.)
Unfortunately, there's no _remarkable_ influence by that regarding
creating the release of eCS rc7/2.0.
Moreover, I see some work being done on the eCS server, the demo CD
and eastern languages. That is all welcome, but please _not now_,
because that delays the release of rc7/2.0 even more.
Further important changes:
- eWP shutdown was improved: Paul's and Steve's changes to
XWP's shutdown were included (and work well for me) and
creation of a shutdown folder via the button in the
desktop's properties finally works.
- Digital transfer of a CD player should now be enabled by
default.
- Great improvements for translators of some specific
packages.
We're still waiting for a release date.
The release date delay of the German version will suffer from that, as
well.

I (Andreas) decided to support rather the EN than the DE version from now on and for a limited time. Instead of translating further packages, I'll just try to implement the future changes of the EN version into the DE version, but with a lower priority. I will lower my work on the DE version to a minimum in order to help with getting the EN version of RC7 released.

Zsolt's updates apparently work well. But there exist a few more issues with the installation than for the EN version, notable as beeps and entries in log files.
The texts are actually at a high level (regarding only the packages we've changed).
Unfortunately the dialog resources and also eStyler resources were completely outdated, so I decided to better start with translation from scratch. I've just replaced these outdated files with the English ones in order to check more easily were the remaining install glitches come from.
Retranslating DIALOG.ZIP (or merging the changes) can be considered as a task taking up as much time as translating the GPS files.

Since Dec-2008 Thorolf managed to get a German version compiled and installed. It is based on the en-us source files and exchanges English files with German ones. This method ensures that both the English and the German version have the same (build)level of their files.
In the meantime Zsolt worked on getting the CVS sources of the en-us and the de-de files sychronized. Since yesterday it's possible to compile a German ISO out of the CVS sources. Moreover, it installs - with some few errors, but it looks promising.
That means: We have now to check if the current German versions of IBM files are on the same level as the English ones. Probably Zsolt did that, but there exist unfortunately no tables to do that easily and even the used tools were not checked in.

The most important parts are translated and also checked in. NLS files for some few tools need to be reworked. The first German ISO was created by Thorolf. He has to alter the standard build process for this.
BTW: Working with Thorolf means fun and was highly motivating. That's the reason why the translation of the installer was almost completed.
JohannesUrscher is now officially added to translation team. (He already did much work on the GPS files.)

The NLS dependent files of the eWP compilation were checked in.
ThorolfGodawa has added many contributions, both ideas and translated text files.

The version 1.2r is already done. (Thanks to Christian and probably others.) Because huge parts (like XWorkplace) already exist in a German version, making the changes between 1.2r and 2.0 should be probably easier than for other languages.
After first trials, I had to think over translation guidelines first. Fortunately,
ChristianHennecke has already discussed most of them--I remember something like that most likely from your work on the XWP translation. I'll try to keep them in mind while making my contributes.
In the meantime, Johannes Urscher joined the German translation group. :-)
Many files have to be committed now. Since my vacation is over, I should take time to do so in the near future.
What we have ready (locally, most of them still not proof-read) is:
- the installer files
- the desktop files
- the ACPI Wizard files.
Moreover, I should create a page naming a few guidelines for the German translation. (That could help other people, who will step in, like I did. I have a draft text file here that has to be reworked.)
